Possible (By Cat Matchuk)

Is it possible to split this heart in two and give away the pieces?
They are sharp, jagged.
Not equal,
not perfect halves.

Words bring forward stars to forge a world from the ink, breathe, your heart will write.

Relax
here’s a small pond
The water feels like needles pricking every inch of me
but never strong enough to rip me open
I never kept track of our kisses.
I can’t remember which one
was the last.
The pain is not a secret.
Although I throw scarred leather
over these bones,
the angles of my heart still rip through paper
Hands instantly reach up, cradling a broken nose. No matter how tight my hold is, the blood still seeps through my fingers. It drips down my arm and grows cold against the warm summer air.
And this is the way it has to be.
With a heavy sigh, my hands leave my face to push myself up from the ground. I begin walking down the dirt road. Trees are silhouetted against the setting sun, and really, it’s a gorgeous town.

White wall, white paint,
it peels off with time.
Make a stage for the shadow puppets.
Day brought the shadows when it shone too bright,
created the darkness to dance with the light.
Blame the sun for burning,
fire on your skin,
and watch as the clouds abandon the sky.
You see me, you see right through,
past the flesh and into the heart.
Awaking from a dream just to stumble across the broken concrete of buildings,
you wish to be dreaming again, it’s better.
The wind was unforgiving,
taking the words from my head before they could dance on my tongue.
Sifting through every grain of sand,
trudging along the ocean.

A frozen touch where she walks
amid the claws of the winter trees.
While she wanders weak and cold, she whispers to the sky,
breathing into the stars a trail of fog.
Could you ever love me? Continue reading “Abandoned”
